NEWARK — Dixie Jerles walked across the stage hesitantly to collect her prize of $900 Sunday at The Advocate’s 2012 Bridal Show.

The master of ceremonies of the event in the Reese Center on the Newark campus of Ohio State University and Central Ohio Technical College drew her name from the large barrel of registered brides-to-be.

The 60-year-old Zanesville resident said she felt awkward because so many young brides were in the audience. After accepting the money, she cried backstage.

Jerles is getting married in August to Richard Wiseman, 71, also of Zanesville.

This will be the second wedding for both.

Jerles lost her first husband five years ago on Feb. 13, when he died from kidney and heart disease.

Wiseman lost his first wife to Huntington’s disease more than two years ago.

They never thought they would be able to be happy again, but that all changed after they met.

“I feel God has blessed us,” Jerles said, sobbing. “How many times in your life do you have the chance to find happiness with someone you love? I feel like God brought us together.”

Jerles had come to the show because her 15-year-old granddaughter, Kaitlin Jerles, was a model for Jillian’s Formal Wear at the bridal fashion show.

Jerles had walked around the show, sampled the cakes and talked to the photographers, not realizing there was something to sign up for.

The emcee offered brides-to-be a last chance to register. Jerles gave her registration to someone on stage, and before she knew it, her name was called.

“It was just a shock,” Jerles said. “What a nice surprise. My granddaughter was as excited as I was.”

Jerles and Wiseman knew of each other for years, while they were married to their former spouses.

They had run into each other many times in the community, but didn’t really meet until friends introduced them. They immediately hit it off, Jerles said.

Wiseman proposed to her Oct. 1. The couple will use the $900 for the reception they are planning to have for family and friends.

“Everything is moving so fast,” Jerles said. “We just want to share the happiness we have with our family. That is what it is all about.”

(AP) LOS ANGELES — The Spirit Awards celebrate the best in low-budget filmmaking. But within those honors, the John Cassavetes Award goes to films with even lower budgets: those made for under $500,000.

This year’s five nominees talked to The Associated Press about how they did it on the cheap. The winner will be announced at Saturday’s awards ceremony.

___

“Bellflower,” about an idyllic love that turns explosively toxic. Evan Glodell wrote and directed; he and Vincent Grashaw edited, produced and co-star.

Budget: $17,000. Shot on high-definition video with three cameras Glodell built himself over three years in Oxnard and Ventura, Calif.

Their secret: “Being relentless and not compromising ever when you know what matters,” said Glodell, who couch-hopped, lived in an unfinished garage and sold nearly everything he owned. “Just keep going and remember what you’re trying to do and be willing to do absolutely anything short of killing someone to do it.” Grashaw added: “We wouldn’t have made a movie as good, I don’t think, if we’d had the money. I don’t think it would have been poured on the screen the same way.”

The hardest part: “Staying honest and not giving up,” Glodell said. “Because you question whether you’re crazy or not, and this may sound totally stupid but: ‘Do I even deserve to make a movie? Are my ideas dumb?’ Because you’re working so hard at it, you think you’re crazy.” Said Grashaw: “Just the fear of things totally collapsing and us not being able to finish it. If we didn’t have money to put gas in the car to go do something, we’d lose a day.”

Their advice to aspiring filmmakers: “What you have in front of you, the people that you know, the resources that are available to you, you can work within those guidelines,” Glodell said.

“Don’t think too much about what other audiences or people are going to think,” Grashaw said. “Just make your own damn movie and it’ll go wherever it’s supposed to go after that.”

___

“Circumstance,” about a lesbian romance between two Iranian teens. Written, directed and produced by Maryam Keshavarz.

Budget: Mid-$300,000s. Shot on Super 16 film (then blown up to 35mm) over 24 days in Lebanon to look like Iran.

Secret: “Besides insanity? You really have to kind of sell people on this idea of this project: it’s your first film and why you’re so passionate about it. Because most people basically worked for free or they worked for, like, $100 a day. Locations were all given for free. A lot of the places where we stayed — because it was an on-location shoot — the housing, a lot of it was very cheap or free. … To do that, I had to get there early. It was a very long pre-production. I went several months before the producers and I met everyone who was working in film.”

Hardest part: “Doing anything inexpensively can be hard but in a way it can be good because it makes you more creative … That aspect of it, coupled with the fact that we were shooting in sometimes hostile locations — we had to submit kind of a fake script to the censors and slowly the word got out that we were actually shooting something different. … Then we had to smuggle the film out. So it’s not like we were a low-budget production but then we could see the dailies every day.”

Advice: “If you decide you’re going to do the project, decide what your means are and make it within those means. It doesn’t mean you have to get people that are less talented. There’s a lot of great, talented people that, if they believe in your vision, they’ll want to work on your project because they work on so many projects that they don’t believe in.”

___

“The Dynamiter,” about a 15-year-old boy trying to protect his younger half-brother. Directed, co-written and co-produced by Matthew Gordon.

Budget: $250,000. Shot on digital video on the Red One digital camera over 20 days in Greenville, Miss.

Secret: “Just the generosity and the teamwork of all our cast and crew. You can get the best deal on a camera or any kind of equipment but it’s the cast and crew that has to work together as one strong team to make something work — particularly on the cheap. A lot of local people, all the actors worked for free. All the locations were donated. The crew worked all for a cut rate or no rate or very little rate. It was just a family atmosphere that made it possible.”

Hardest part: “There’s no time, and with the resources you have, you have a lot fewer choices and have to make do. That’s what you do. Time is short and when you’re asking for favors you don’t know what you’re going to get in any instance. People couldn’t make it, they’d cancel, and you’re dealing with so many things that aren’t preferable.”

Advice: “Make sure it’s absolutely something you love and have to do, and then it’ll always work out. If it’s really from a true place, something you love and want to share with other people, it will always work out. If you don’t do it that way, every trouble, challenge is going to seem much more insurmountable.”

___

“Hello Lonesome,” featuring three separate stories about people trying to connect. Written, directed, produced and shot by Adam Reid.

Budget: $50,000. Shot on digital video with the Panasonic HVX camera over 15 days in Connecticut, New Jersey and Manhattan.

Secret: “There was no art department on ‘Hello Lonesome’ … The real world, especially at this budget range, does a magical job standing in for itself,” Reid said. “You strip away everything but what was essential. … So many things are donated. I have production partners that I work with in commercials and promos and they were really excited to work on a movie so I have so much more latitude in post which most filmmakers don’t necessarily get.”

Hardest part: “Having patience. It’s not going to happen quickly. So while the shoot was very compressed because that has to happen quickly, every other aspect of the process, including this — where we’re at now, the film festival tour, getting it seen, working out the distribution stuff — it takes time.”

Advice: “If you believe in your project and love the process, greenlight yourself. Turn the page and make it happen. I think it’s actually the best way to work. I don’t want to sound anti-Hollywood, I just think there’s too much dependence on looking for acceptance and finding people who will endorse you when you won’t necessarily endorse yourself.”

___

“Pariah,” about a teenage girl struggling to come out as a lesbian. Written and directed by Dee Rees.

Budget: Mid-$400,000s. Shot on 35mm film over 19 days in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Secret: “We couldn’t afford a bunch of locations so (producer Nekisa Cooper) found a real estate broker who was selling brownstones in Fort Greene. So we went to them and there was a seller who was trying to sell their brownstone and it hadn’t been selling, so they were happy to have us rent it out for a month. … Then the art department was able to art out most of the house and we shot there for, like, 11 out of the 19 days. … All the interiors were in that house. … That allowed us to pre-rig the house and have our stuff there, have somebody stay there for security.”

Hardest part: Although Rees had already made an acclaimed short version of “Pariah,” raising money was difficult. “Even though we had the laurels, we’d already been to Sundance, people still were not writing the checks. … People put this film in a box — they thought it was too small, they thought it was a black lesbian film and that’s all that’s going to see it, so it was still a tough sell. It was really finding people that believed in the story. Our first investors were a lesbian couple that didn’t know a thing about film, who just said, ‘We believe in this story.’”

Advice: “It starts with the script, so think about your script and what you need to see to tell the story. If it’s an interior, an interior could be anywhere, so figure out how to consolidate resources and to build relationships early. … The less money you have, the more time you need to prepare and to build those relationships.”

(EndPlay Staff Reports) – If spending this past Valentine’s Day alone had you reminiscing about past relationships and hoping to reconcile with an old flame, think again.

According to a new study from Kansas State University by assistant professor of family studies, Amber Vennum, being a part of a cyclical relationship – a couple that breaks up and gets back together – is not going to make anyone happy.

Vennum said, “When cyclical couples break up, they tend to be ambiguous about ending the relationship. So it can be unclear to one or both partners if they broke up and why they broke up, which leads to them continuing the romantic relationship. Other times the breakup won’t be unilateral, so one person pursues the other until they get back together.”

The findings were the result of evaluating the responses from cyclical and non-cyclical couples by using a relationship deciding scale to determine what the couples felt about their relationship and characteristics.

The results revealed that when couples got back together, they were more impulsive about making big decisions like moving in together or having a child together.

Because of these rash decisions, cyclical couples tended to be unsatisfied with their partner, reported poor communication and a lower self-esteem.

The news release also reported that similar findings were found in another U.S. study on cyclical relationships.

The other U.S. research team of cyclical relationships found that the reasons couples reunited was because they thought the other had changed or felt that their communication was better.

Cyclical relationships don’t differ much whether a couple is married or simply dating.

“It really shows that those patterns of cyclicality tend to repeat. If you tend to be cyclical while dating, you tend to be cyclical while married. The more you are cyclical, the more your relationship quality tends to decrease and that creates a lack of trust and uncertainty about the future of the relationship, perpetuating the pattern,” Vennum said.

FORT MYERS — If Red Sox [team stats] fans have only a vague understanding of what Cody Ross is all about, that’s OK. After all, it’s not like we’re talking about, say, Albert Pujols.

No. We are talking about a 5-foot-10 (or so says the media guide), 195-pound journeyman outfielder who in eight seasons has played for the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cincinnati Reds, Florida Marlins and, most recently, the San Francisco Giants.

He has never been an All-Star. Never led the league in anything.

But there are stars, and then there are working-stiff professional athletes who find themselves gifted with a golden opportunity to make history. And who do not screw up that opportunity.

Ross, who hopes to get a ton of playing time this season in the Red Sox outfield, is just that kind of working-stiff professional athlete. And, man, talk about being in the right place at the right time: Acquired on waivers by the Giants in August 2010 for no other reason than to keep the San Diego Padres from getting him, Ross became one of the main reasons there’s a World Series banner flying over ATT Park. As in hitting .350 with three home runs and five RBI in the Giants’ six-game triumph over the Phillies in the National League Championship Series.

The Giants have since deployed some revisionist history, saying, that, nooooo, they really did want Ross all along, honest, and that plucking him off the waiver wire had nothing to do with blocking the Padres, against whom they were competing for first place in the NL West.

Yeah, right.

“(Giants general manager Brian Sabean) told me that’s not why they got me, but I know that it was,” said a very, very grateful Ross. “He said, ‘Contrary to what you may hear, we wanted you. We wouldn’t have put a claim on you if we didn’t.’ I said, ‘I don’t care. I’m here. Let’s go. I’ll do anything you want me to do.’ ”

What the Giants wanted him to do, in the early going, was sit in the dugout and watch.

“They already had five outfielders,” he said. “I was coming in as the sixth outfielder. When I got there I wasn’t playing, and I was saying to myself, ‘What’s going on?’ It was tough. I’ll be honest with you.”

But then, as Ross put it, “Guillen had his deal with performance-enhancing stuff.” That would be Jose Guillen, whom the Giants had acquired from the Kansas City Royals. Guillen, who was supposed to bring offense to the Giants, hit .266 with three home runs in 42 games, but was left off the postseason roster when it was made known that Major League Baseball was investigating shipments of human growth hormone he was allegedly receiving.

So first the Giants get Ross to keep him away from the Padres. And then Guillen goes home. And then . . .

“(Giants manager) Bruce Bochy came up to me and said, ‘You’re going to be my starting right fielder in the playoffs.’ I said, ‘I promise I won’t let you down.’ ”

In 15 postseason games — Division Series, NLCS, World Series — he hit .294 with five home runs and 10 RBI. Because of that, he has a World Series ring. And for the rest of his life, he has a swell after-dinner speech he can deliver about being in the right place at the right time, taking advantage of opportunity, never giving up, and so on.

“One hundred percent absolutely true,” he said. “I’m already doing it. I was inducted into the Hall of Fame at my high school in Carlsbad (N.M.) and that’s exactly what I said. I went from what I thought was a bad situation to a good situation, which turned into not the situation I thought it was going to be, to being the best situation for me, if that makes any sense.

“That’s my speech,” he said. “A situation that at first may not be the best for you may turn out to be something different, something better, if you give it a chance.”

Bear with us for a few moments while we extend the group gush that began with last week’s admission that our first true love was, in fact, a word.

“Ethereal” was ours. You shared yours. We love them too.

I fell in love with quixotic, which came from Miguel de Cervantes’ “Don Quixote.” I always imagine a crazy man attacking windmills.

—Cynthia Chang

“Equinox.” When I was a young boy I thought that was the coolest word in the world. I said it so much that my dad, a high-school English teacher, surprised me with a No. 2 pencil with “equinox” in all caps stenciled on the side. I was elated. Everyone else in class had their Ticonderogas at the ready. I had my Equinox. I fondly remember my younger brother’s word crush: “Antidisestablishmentarianism”. Too long to run down the side of a pencil, though. I miss that pencil, and I miss my dad.

—Kevin Craver

I fell in love with the word lugubrious. It was on a junior high vocabulary test and I have adored it for 50 years.

—Linda Jones

Not sure when I fell in love with “incandescent” but I still love it. And my publisher actually let me keep it in my children’s picture book, “Flying Jack” (Boyds Mills Press, 2003), which was brave and astounding.

Monkey. It’s just a fun word. Nothing at all to do with the meaning per se; I have always just loved saying it.

—Sarah Krikorian

I don’t remember my exact age, but I think it was around fourth grade, and the word was tintinnabulation. It was such a lovely word to say out loud.

—Patty Konarski

I’m an Indonesian book editor, living in Jakarta, and working in both Indonesian and English. My first word crush in Indonesian would be “matahari,” which means “sun.” But it’s actually composed of two words: “mata” (eye) and “hari” (day), so you can take it as meaning “the eye of the day.” I loved the image of an eye in the sky. My first English word crush would, I believe, be “realm.” For some reason, it conjured in my mind images of fairies. I still love both words.

—Rani Elsanti

My first word crush–and what is still my favorite word–is manifest. I grew up in the Episcopal church and it seems that I remember many of the hymns being about how Christ was God manifest, or the manifestation of God. I seemed to feel all the glory and magnificence of that powerful truth in that word: manifest. Interestingly, it’s a word I rarely use. It’s kind of a secret crush, I guess.

—Robin White Goode

I’ve had many word crushes over the years, and of course, can’t remember any of them but one: picturesque. I must have read it in a magazine when I was pretty small (5 or 6), and decided it was a word I should try to use. It got a lot of laughs when I managed to work it into a conversation with my parents one night at dinner, misapplying it to my cat, and mispronouncing it ‘picture-skew.’ It remained ‘picture-skew’ in my family from then on.

And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life…indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

                                                                                           – Romans 8:38

It is hardly a matter of wonder that the country that gave the world instant tea and instant coffee should be the one to give it instant Christianity. And it cannot be denied that it was American Fundamentalism that brought instant Christianity to the gospel churches.

The simplicity which is in Christ is rarely found among us…we, in this day, know God only imperfectly, and the peace of God scarcely at all. If we would find God amid all the religious externals, we must first determine to find Him.

                                                                                           – A. W. Tozer

MIDDLE EAST, February 20, 2012— There is no voice like Whitney Houston’s. Whenever she comes on the air, one cannot help but to be still and listen. It is the rare individual, like Whitney Houston, that is God’s gifted musical instrument and gives us a glimpse of heaven.

Whitney Houston was extravagantly fortunate to be a blessing to others, but somewhere she lost her spiritual foothold.

She has left behind a legacy of phenomenal worldly achievement many will aspire to – but her success ultimately may have cut short her life.

She could have been a role model for millions of desperate young people for many years to come, but she chose a lifestyle of addiction and compromise that took her far away from the Christian convictions she grew up with.

With a voice like hers, she hardly needed the typical sexy showbiz image, but she seemed unconcerned about the impact that diluting her Christian values had on herself and others.

It seems that perhaps for Whitney the “gospel” left the music.

If Christianity is the real thing, then Christ has to be counterfeit – they can’t both be true.

Much has been made of Whitney’s church upbringing, but often a traditional, churched background is a sure recipe for someone becoming an apostate. Fortunately that did not happen to Whitney, from her media interviews her faith appeared to be authentic. Unfortunately, she may have left the genuine for the fake; and her choices cost her dearly.

This extract from Whitney’s 2009 interview on the Oprah Winfrey show offers sad insights into a life gone awry, even as she struggled to hold on to her convictions.

Oprah: There’s a wonderful quote by the L.A. Times. They said, “The pain, and frankly, disgust that so many pop fans felt during Houston’s decline was caused not so much by her personal distress as by her seemingly careless treatment of the national treasure that happened to reside within her.”… You were not like any of the others. You really were given the voice. You were given that treasure. And people felt, how could you not know that that was to be treasured?

Would you just sit in your room and do drugs?

Whitney: Yeah. Talk on the phone. Watch TV. Listen to gospel. I would still read my Bible, amazingly enough. I would still read my Bible. I still had it in me. I knew God was there. I knew the light was there and I was just trying to get back to it. I just kept trying to get back to that spirituality.

Oprah: How long were you in rehab?

Whitney: I did my stint. You do your 30 days. I went to one where I could take my child with me. Everywhere I just had to have her with me. I wanted her to understand. I didn’t lie to her. I couldn’t.

Oprah: Really. Did you explain to her about the drugs?

Whitney: Yes.

Oprah: What did you say? How do you tell your child?

Whitney: I kind of associated it with our lifestyle. Our lifestyle. And what could happen.

Oprah: You can see yourself in Bobbi Kristina?

Whitney: Oh, all over her. She writes creatively all the time. She writes. And she sings. She’s really starting to sing really well now.

Oprah: Is she good?

Whitney: Yeah, she is. I want her to take her time. I don’t want anybody to touch her. I want to groom her.

Oprah: So if she chooses to be in this business, that’s okay with you?

Whitney: Yeah, but I will be there. Like my mom was there with me. When I was just getting in the business, and they came for me when I was 14 and wanted to sign me, my mother said: ”No way. Whitney’s got a lot more to learn.”

Oprah: Who do you love?

Whitney: The Lord. I do. I’m so humbled and so thankful. By his grace, his goodness. And for never giving up on me. I love my mother. My daughter. My relatives. My sisters. My brothers. I love you. Because I knew somewhere in the background you were there praying too.

Despite her own abysmal personal life, with all the money in the world for her daughter to choose any career she wanted, Whitney intended to guide 18-year old Bobbi Kristina into show business, knowing all the inherent risks.

Do the lyrics of her hit song ‘The Greatest Love of All,’ betray her lack of a sense of purpose?

She got it wrong – self-love is an important psychological trait, but –“Learning to love yourself,” is not “the greatest love of all.” Love is other-centered and acts, like the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore wrote: “I slept and dreamt that life was Joy. I woke and saw that life was Duty. I acted, and behold, Duty was Joy.”

David F. Wells in his book Above All Earthly Powers, points out: “One hears the belief expressed in different ways that each must create one’s own meaning or that it is morally permissible for everyone to do one’s “own thing,” provided no one gets hurt – a strange proviso which has no moral legs upon which to stand on in an empty universe!”

It appears Houston could not clarify for herself who is sovereign, God or her audience? What was her authority in real life, scripture or culture?

And what is important, faithfulness or success? Again when singing, “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength,” she seems to have forgotten Psalm 46: 1, God is our refuge and our strength, a very present help in trouble, and Jesus’ startling statement in John 15:5: “… for without Me, you can do nothing.”

In reviewing the research on church life between 1996 and 2002, researcher George Barna stumbled upon a most disconcerting fact. Why is it, he wondered, that baby boomers were initially so opposed to religion but now make up fully half of the born again movement?

The answer, he concluded, is that they are practiced consumers who were offered a deal that they simply could not turn down.

For “a one-time admission of imperfection and weakness” they received in return “permanent peace with God.” The result was that “millions of Boomers, who said the prayer, asked for forgiveness and went on with their life, with virtually nothing changed.”

And Barna adds, that they “saw it as a deal in which they could exploit God and get what they wanted without giving up anything of consequence.”

Until the facts are known we can only speculate about how Houston died, whether the prescription drugs found in her hotel room or the alcohol CNN reported she was seen having a few hours before she died had anything to do with it.

But there had to be a reason she was called away at 48 – for her grieving fan base it will remain a mystery, but in God’s mercy for his wayward offspring there are meaningful spiritual connotations for a premature exit, when three score years and ten is the median.

For Whitney, we can speculate it had more to do with God’s favour rather than his wrath.

First, her husband Lamar Odom got transferred to the Dallas Mavericks, her sister Kim’s marriage tanked, and the web was rampant with rumors over WHO her real daddy was. What are Khloe and Lamar’s astrology predictions for 2012?

For Khloe, born under the astrology sign of Cancer is all about family and love. A natural mom, she likes to get in everyone’s personal business and offer advice. When it comes to her hubby Lamar, she puts her man first. Sometimes she even tries to hard.

In the new season of Khloe and Lamar, fans get a peek at her marriage with her NBA star hubby. She says,”Our relationship is phenomenal. We are so in love with each other,” Khloé gushes at the beginning of the episode. “The most important thing to me right now is showing Lamar how much I love him.”

Wanting to keep the honeymoon phase going for awhile, Khloé decides to install a sex swing in her house. The couple decides to try and use the swing…but it breaks and ruins the moment. “The freaking thing falls out of the ceiling! I’m embarrassed!” Khloé says. Ha!

Lamar born under the sign of Scorpio is a secretive guy. He likes relationship have an air of mystery. Khloe might be better off planning a sexy surprise versus gadgets. Not so sexy when your sex swing falls out of the ceiling, funny yes.

Astrologically, Khloe and Lamar are a perfect soulmate match. Although, Lamar will hit a difficult period in 2013 and 2014. His NBA career will start to wind down and he’s going to have plan B for his career. I’m sure her mom Kris Jenner has lots of plans in store for the couple. Either way, this season should be interesting. Stay tuned.
