It’s Black Friday, the day consumers race to stores to score major deals on merchandise. But starting last year, a new, more local concept was born: Small Business Saturday, an effort to eschew big retailers in favor of stocking up on holiday gifts and other items with local merchants.

The movement, which has already attracted more than 1 million people on Facebook, has one simple premise: Keep the dollars local for at least one day.
According to the Small Business Administration, 60-80 percent of local jobs are generated by small businesses, and approximately $70 from every $100 in sales is returned to the community.
